The fate of codename "Casino"

Lately there’s been some stir about a project at Microsoft often referred to by codenames like “Casino” and “OneView.”  The team behind Casino started the project with some clear goals: to bridge the gap between searching local and remote data, and to create a next-generation desktop search experience building on the current Windows Search platform (offered in Windows Vista and Windows XP with WDS).  The team consisted of developers from the original Windows Desktop Search team along with a team coming out of Microsoft Research who had built a next-generation Search prototype called “Tesla.”

Readers of the Find My Stuff blog will recall that for a time this project was considered for a Windows Live branded release.  However we came to realize that Live wasn’t really the place for us.  Offering a “Windows” experience and a “Windows Live” experience that tried to solve the same problems only served to confuse our customers.  “Why is this separate from Windows Desktop Search?” people would ask – and rightfully so, I think.  As completion of Windows Vista and Office 2007 neared, we began thinking about where the technology best belonged.  And with the completion of these products came an opportunity to refocus our efforts and align ourselves with our customers’ needs and expectations.

So what happened to our technology?  Basically, we found a new home for it J  We’re very excited that now “Casino” is a part of Windows.  What does this mean for “Casino”?  Well, in the short term it means we won’t be offering a public preview as soon as we’d hoped.  There are a lot of benefits that come with being part of Windows: better integration, improved enterprise manageability, and easier deployment.  Making a change like this takes time and effort, but in the end we think it’s the best thing for our customers.

We’ve got a new name too.  What we called “Casino” is now called Windows Search 4.  And it’s alive and well.  We’re releasing a preview of Windows Search 4 to some of our enterprise customers so we can get lots of solid feedback about what it is that companies want Windows Search to do.

So, stay tuned…we’ll have an update on our plans for you in a few months.

Hmm. Great. But like...

I hope this means that it will simply become a part of Vista in a service pack (e.g. SP1) or something. Because it should be 100% integrated it the shell. And NOT be bolted on like WDS3 for XP. Because if you start having toolbars and appear in Vista for WS4 it would make things very confusing.

What I would like to know is.

What does WS4 improve on over Vistas inbuilt search?

But why not rename the whole thing (WDS 3+Windows Search 4) either "Windows Search" or "Windows Desktop Search". Dont enterprises contain desktop servers? Or desktop only means client machines? Just keep it separate from Live Search which is for the web. Simple.

The way i see it is,

Live Search is the web search. To Vs google etc.

Thats not a problem. And they HAVENT made that confusing!

But Casino was apart of the Live Branding and now its become apart of the shell team.

Which is COOL. Since it hasnt got anything to do with the Web Services per say.

So im just saying. Update Vista Via a Service Pack to the new WS4. Which must be fully  into Integrated Vistas seach features.

"Someone" -

The current plan is that Windows Search 4 *is* Windows Desktop Search 4.

Further details about WS4 (like features, release date, etc) won't come until next year.

I'm confused about the direction of WDS / Windows Desktop Search 4.  As I understand WDS for XP or Vista, it will only do indexed searching on files that are below your profile directory path.

This limmitation has prevented me from using WDS in XP or Vista.  I can think of several scenarios where this would be true, but here is one that I would think would be common for most enterprise deployments:

Our goal when deploying workstations, is to create an environment where the applications run locally from the workstation and the users data is centrally located on file servers where they are properly backed up.

By turning on the folder redirection GPO, the user can access any workstation in the enterprise and access their documents from their "My Documents" folder.  This does mean however, that the physical "My documents" folder underneath the users profile directory is always empty.  A consequence of this is that you can never to indexed searches of your documents!

Am I overlooking something?

On Vista or XP (with WDS) you can index files from any directory.  The default index locations are limited to the user profiles (plus e-mail stores) - but you can choose to index any filesystem location.  You can also install the UNC add-on (currently only availabe for XP) to index network locations.

On Vista, there are two more options worth noting:

1)  If you are searching a fileshare on another Vista machine (that is indexed) from the Vista shell - it will remote the query to the computer hosting the share and search against its index.

2)  If you make use of the "Offline Files" function for a remote share on your Vista client, those files will automatically be indexed (using the Client Side Cache).

I hope you find that with that information, you'll give WDS/Vista a try =)

This post for what will now be WDS 4 is the first indication I'd seen that WDS 3 had shipped...

Though I suppose I could have guessed since the Office 2007 beta was using a beta version of it.

You guys need a way of making the availablity of these new components visible to people (I only just noticed PowerShell had shipped too).
