Do things faster with Keyboard Shortcuts

Keyboard shortcuts help maximize efficiency at common tasks, the lesser known ones are even sometimes passed around as expert tips for Windows.  I have to admit that seeing someone in action that knows all the shortcuts and can use them together efficiently is a very impressive sight.  This post is to share some of my personal favorites, listen to what others find useful and link to more info.

There are many improvements in Vista, so I won’t be able to cover them all.  Here are a few that I find the most addictive:

1.       Launch any app

a.       WinKey, Type an app name (eg. Word), Enter

b.      A variation of this is looking for Control Panel applets like Indexing Options (eg. Index)

c.       CTRL-SHIFT-ENTER will also launch the app elevated

2.       Instant Search on any folder – gives me fast contextual search that includes file contents

a.       CTRL-E, type

3.        Advanced Query Syntax (AQS) in search box – not technically a keyboard shortcut, but a favorite search feature of mine

a.       From:Bill Date:Yesterday

b.      For more details look for ‘Advanced Search’ in Vista Help

What are your favorites?  Anything missing that you would like to see?

For more info you can search the Vista Help topics for ‘Keyboard Shortcuts’.  The IE team also has a Quick Reference for IE 7: check out this web page for the list.  (Special thanks to Robert Sweeney for the link!)

Here’s a quick reference for the Shell (may be updated):

Under "General Shortcuts," I believe ALT should be CTRL.

Also, don't forget SHIFT+DEL, CTRL+INS, SHIFT+INS, ALT+BACKSPACE, and SHIFT+ALT+BACKSPACE (cut, copy, paste, undo, redo.)

Not to mention F6 (moves cursor between UI parts) and CTRL+NUMPAD PLUS (resizes columns to fit.)

The one thing I've wanted forever is a shortcut to create a new folder in Explorer. It's one of the only things that I have to break back to the mouse for.

Of course, the best would be assignable keyboard shortcuts for any command, but you're not going to do that are you?

Would have loved assignable keyboard shortcuts to Command prompt. But Command prompt is not forgotten. Can you add it at the last minute? ; )

shame that the pre existing short cut of Backspace in Windows Explorer has changed.  in all versions of windows upto and including Vista, Backspace would give the PARENT.  now it gives the PREVIOUS in the history.  I would have preffered it to stay as it was.

Will modifier keys be localized as in XP (God I hope not)? Why do it_IT users have to press F12 to save in Microsoft apps, when it's ctrl+s in most other applications and in nonlocalized Microsoft apps? (Same for print, save as, and that horrid ctrl+keypad 5 combination for Select All).

Thanks for pointing out some typos (copy, paste, etc...) and some misprints (steelbytes - Backscape does work like it did in XP)!

Keep sending us comments and I'll try and keep the list up-to-date until the 'official' one is published on msdn.

Actually steelbytes, I was partially wrong.  Backspace is changed from XP.  If there is nothing in the navigation stack (eg, no Back), then Backspace will go Up to it's parent folder.  If there is something in the navigation stack to go Back to, it will go back.  The post will be updated shortly.

Can you supply some run box shortcuts for Vista because many are different than XP?

Also what is the run box shortcut for Help and Support which I believe is a web based server in Vista--helpctr.exe won't do it?

The only one I didn't see here is for Windows Explorer, if you hit CTRL + Numpad Plus Sign (+), it will expand all the columns to fit the exact width of the widest content, equivalent to double clicking each column separator line. Try it out, and on a laptop without a 10key pad, just add the function key in there, and hit whatever button is mapped to the numpad plus sign.

Let me know if that works. I can't live without it.
