A Question of Priorities

We don’t often talk about it openly, but there is one area where everyone knows that Microsoft has historically been way behind Apple.  It is just one of those places where Apple places an emphasis up-front while we have considered it almost an afterthought or even optional.  Those of us who have worked at both companies know that it is more than a difference in priorities – it is really a different outlook on how to make software.  In fact, at Apple this one area is often considered more important than the entire rest of the product combined.

I am of course talking about t-shirts.

For Vista, we have made a concerted effort to have more t-shirts and better t-shirts, and the progress thus far has been impressive.  We still have a long way to go in changing the views of upper management (for example, we still have to actually have an approved project before making a t-shirt for it) but Rome wasn’t built in a day.    Here is a taste of how we are doing:

Head to the gallery to see more examples of our progress so far.  With enough focus, I am confident we can come out on top.

As a former intern, I can vouch for that! After my first internship with MS, I think I had nearly 10 t-shirts with some combination of "Microsoft" "Windows" or "Shell" on them.

Yeah... T-Shirts are their priority.  What a joke.  Spend your time fixing the stuff in Vista that pisses everyone off before you design t-shirts.  I mean for Christ's sake, you can design t-shirts in less than a week.  Do that after RTM is shipped and before Vista hits the shelves.

Nemo, I'm going to have to mostly agree with you there.  On the other hand, these guys work very hard, and I'm sure they appreciate having some time to goof off and have fun, while helping build a good team atmosphere.

Nemo, stop spasing here. UI work is to a large extend creative work. And you can quickly 'burn out' if you do not have some fun stuff to do...

Apple is also ahead in areas like advanced typography and desktop publishing, pro music creation and digital media.

Apple fans (by the small sample here) also seem to be ahead in lacking a sense of humour....
